No Excuses...How using extreme ownership to live and thrive works

Becky Burleigh is one of the top college soccer coaches, and in this video, she talks about how her team produced a no excuses environment to achieve success. One thing that rings true with me is the importance of the team culture as you advance your program. As a Gilpin coach, I have seen and experienced what happens when a program's culture lets excuses become an easy way to explain unsuccessful performances. In this video Coach Burleigh is talking about bringing a good team up to the highest level...but what resonates with me as the current Gilpin Football Head Coach is....that looking back I can remember so many of the excuses that were used to prop up a failing program.

As I watched this video multiple times...I think the concepts that I can pull most from Coach Burleigh talk is bringing symbolism to your program and involving the broader organization. At Gilpin Schools, we have tried hard to engage the entire school, and in many cases the community, in raising our expectations for what a successful program must look like to move beyond excuses. Wins and Losses are only a part of the formula. I think we have been on the right path for a while now, and as we continue to raise the bar of expectation, we naturally purge the concept of excuses. As a program, we need to take extreme ownership over our actions...providing leadership by teaching those around us to understand why we have high expectations...it is so that we can live and thrive without excuses.

Classroom Quote:
“I think ‘burn out’ is when we stop wanting to learn. The players and teams change over the years and it is up to us to make sure that we continue to as well. Plus the art of coaching is stealing great ideas from others and putting them into the structure you have created within your own team.”
